Monthly provincial prices received by farmers in May for grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs and dairy products are now available.
Compared with April, slaughter hog prices were slightly lower in May across all provinces except Manitoba (+0.4%). The price declines ranged from 1.4% in Prince Edward Island and Quebec to 0.1% in Saskatchewan. In May, weaker exports of live slaughter hogs to the United States may have put downward pressure on prices.
Slaughter cattle prices continued to increase across Canada in May, driven by strong beef demand, with gains led by Quebec (+5.4%) and Alberta (+5.0%). Compared with May 2025, slaughter cattle prices rose by at least 14.4% in every province in May 2026.
Supported by strong demand, feeder cattle prices increased from April to May in all provinces, except Manitoba (-0.4%), with gains ranging from 5.3% in the Atlantic provinces to 0.6% in Saskatchewan. Prices in May 2026 were at least 18.4% higher than one year earlier across all provinces.
In May, prices for canola rose for the fourth consecutive month across the Prairie provinces, with gains ranging from 4.5% in Manitoba to 2.6% in Alberta. A rebound in Chinese demand after tariff reductions and boosted demand for biofuels supported canola prices.
Prices for wheat (excluding durum) continued the upward trend across the Western provinces in May, led by Manitoba (+3.3%). A weaker global production outlook and decreased domestic seeded areas for the 2026/2027 crop year put upward pressure on prices.
Barley prices increased across all provinces, except Ontario, in May compared with the previous month. Quebec posted the largest month-over-month (+11.6%) and year-over-year (+32.5%) increases. Strong exports and robust domestic demand for feed supported prices.
