Wholesale sales rise in July

Wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) increased 0.3% to $93.1 billion in July. Sales increased in three of the seven subsectors, representing about 50% of total wholesale sales. The largest increases came from the building material and supplies subsector (+3.5% to $13.8 billion) and the food, beverage and tobacco subsector (+1.7% to $16.7 billion). Wholesale sales were 7.9% higher on a year-over-year basis.

In volume terms, wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) were down 0.6% in July.

Building material and supplies subsector drives gains

Sales in the building material and supplies subsector increased 3.5% to $13.8 billion in July. The increase was driven by sales in the metal service centres industry group (+10.3% to $2.6 billion), which was partly attributable to higher prices, notably for steel products.

The food, beverage and tobacco subsector posted the second-largest increase in July, with its sales rising 1.7% to $16.7 billion. Sales increased in three of the four industry groups in the subsector. The food industry group (+1.5% to $14.9 billion) recorded the largest gain, partly because of higher volumes sold.

The increase in wholesale sales in July was moderated by a decline in the mineral, ore and precious metal industry group, in which sales declined 31.4% to $899.6 million. The decrease was partly due to lower volumes sold for precious metals. This downturn led to the decrease within the miscellaneous subsector, which was down 2.9% to $12.3 billion. This was the first decline for the miscellaneous subsector since February.

Wholesale sales increase, led by Ontario and British Columbia

In July, six provinces reported higher wholesale sales, led by Ontario, followed by British Columbia.

Ontario posted a 1.0% increase in sales to reach $48.7 billion in July. Overall, five of seven subsectors recorded higher sales, led by the motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories subsector, which rose 2.7% to $10.9 billion. It was the sixth consecutive increase for this subsector.

British Columbia posted the second-largest increase in provincial wholesale sales in July, rising 4.9% to $9.0 billion. Sales increased in five of seven subsectors, led by the building material and supplies subsector, which rose 24.2% to $2.6 billion.

Offsetting the growth in July was a decline in sales in Quebec (-2.8% to $15.7 billion). The decline was concentrated in the personal and household goods subsector (-11.6% to $3.1 billion).

Wholesale inventories essentially unchanged

Wholesale inventories (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) were essentially unchanged in July, at $140.6 billion.

Inventories decreased in four subsectors in July. The largest decrease came from the personal and household goods subsector (-1.7% to $22.5 billion), followed by the miscellaneous subsector (-1.1% to $15.8 billion).

The inventory-to-sales ratio edged down from 1.52 in June to 1.51 in July. This ratio measures the time, in months, required to exhaust inventories if sales remain at current levels.

Wholesale (sales and inventories) values exclude petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and oilseed and grain unless otherwise stated.

Petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and oilseed and grain data continue to be available in data tables but will be excluded from monthly analysis until historical data are available.

All data in this release are seasonally adjusted and expressed in current dollars unless otherwise noted.

Seasonally adjusted data are data that have been modified to eliminate the effect of seasonal and calendar influences to allow for more meaningful comparisons of economic conditions from period to period. For more information on seasonal adjustment, see the page Seasonal adjustment: Concepts and interpretation, 2026.

Trend-cycle estimates are included in selected charts as a complement to the seasonally adjusted series. These data represent a smoothed version of the seasonally adjusted time series and provide information on longer-term movements, including changes in direction underlying the series. For information on trend-cycle data, see the page Trend-cycle estimation: Concepts, interpretation, and calculation, 2026.

Both seasonally adjusted data and trend-cycle estimates are subject to revision as additional observations become available. These revisions could be large and could even lead to a reversal of movement, especially for reference months near the end of the series or during periods of economic disruptions.

Total wholesale sales expressed in volume are calculated by deflating current dollar values using relevant price indexes. The wholesale sales series in chained (2012) dollars is a chained Fisher volume index, with 2012 as the reference year. For more information, see the publication “Deflation of wholesale sales.”

The Monthly Wholesale Trade Survey covers all industries within the wholesale trade sector, as defined by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), with the exception of business-to-business electronic markets, and agents and brokers (NAICS code 419).
